Your Secret Passion Can Change Your Life!

Almost everyone has at least one thing they feel passionate about. Maybe it’s a cause like homelessness or AIDS. Maybe it’s playing video games or collecting something. The point is, you can turn your passion or hobby into a lucrative business on the World Wide Web. In fact, let me caution you right off the bat to avoid trying to make a business out of doing something in which you have absolutely no interest.

Many online entrepreneurs got their start by writing about or otherwise promoting something they’re already involved with in the brick and mortar world. Others have taken an interest that has lain dormant in the back of their minds and turned it into a lucrative online business. While it may take some additional brainstorming and research to decide exactly what type of online business you’ll start, you’ll be on the right pathway by choosing something that you’re deeply interested in. After all, how can you expect others to patronize a business if the owner is ambivalent? You can’t. That’s why you must give careful thought to this first step.

While it’s much easier to see how you can start an online business if you already have a fantastic product or service to offer, it may not be immediately clear how your passion about fighting homelessness could be turned into a lucrative business you could work from home, especially an online one. Let’s take a look at this example for a moment and explore the possibilities.

Anyone passionate about the plight of the homeless could certainly write articles about homelessness. Some websites pay for articles about a wide variety of subjects where the writer picks the subject. Other writing gigs are directed toward what the client wants, but you may still find some work in this area. Other options include starting and maintaining a blog about homelessness and earning ad revenue. You could also set up your own website dedicated to the plight of the homeless and pledge a certain percentage of revenue from sales to be given to causes supporting the homeless.

There’s just no limit to what you can do when you are truly passionate about something. Before you choose what kind of online business you’ll start, thoroughly examine your interests and hobbies to ensure you’ll be doing the kind of work that truly excites you.

What's your (Dollar) Sign?: Examining your Budget

The next time someone asks you what your sign is, forget the Zodiac and tell them it’s the dollar sign. Then when they look at you a little funny, you’ll have a blast bragging about your online business.

While it’s true that you can indeed start an online business for little or no upfront investment, whether or not you can make a living doing it is another thing entirely. It may take a while to build up the business to the point that you can actually make a living working from your home, so unless you have a healthy savings account, don’t quit your day job.

You would be facing the same situation if you were to open a brick and mortar business, except in that case, you would have to have immediate working capital to run your business and pay the day-to-day expenses like rent and electric bills. While you can put together a website for $20 or less, you can’t expect to garner a steady income stream overnight.

That’s the beauty of the Internet, though. You can get started on your future while you’re living your present. If you don’t have several months’ salary saved up to pay the bills while you’re building your business, you can still get started without resigning your present position. This is also a great way to test the water, so to speak, before you make any permanent changes.

Unlike the way business works in the brick and mortar world, you can literally make money online without spending a dime. Maybe you’ll need to explore several avenues before you settle on the one you’ll build your business around. Maybe you need to earn some start-up money before you can even launch a website. If that is the case, you’ll have no trouble finding things online you can do to make that start-up money.

For example, you may find some things around the house you can sell at eBay or other online auction sites to build your business revenue. You may even find your niche this way; at the very least you can get rid of some unwanted items and make a little money on the side. You can become an affiliate for other Internet marketers and sell their wares while making a nice commission for yourself. You may choose to get involved in several online ventures until you find just the right one for you.

Whatever you decide, don’t let the start stop you. In other words, don’t put off starting your online business until you have thousands of dollars to put into it. It just isn’t necessary to have a large bankroll, or any at all, to get started.

What do you Have to Say About That?: Blogging for Bucks

Everyone has something to say – about something. Whether you use a blog to promote your website or just want to get something off your chest, you might as well get paid for it!

While there are sites that will pay for blog posts, the posts are most often dictated by the client and won’t help you to further your own online business. Blogging is one way to start working online immediately even if you don’t have your own website. You can easily sign up at one of the free blogging sites and start posting immediately. You can then place ads on your blog if you choose and earn revenue when others click on those ads.

While blogging isn’t likely to earn you enough money to make a living – at least not right away, some bloggers are able to generate a tidy sum each and every month from their blogs. Keep in mind, however successful bloggers constantly promote their blogs in order to drive traffic to their blog site. While there are various ways to do so, posting in forums and message boards is a popular and accepted way to promote your blog. Just be sure to read the rules before promoting your blog in your post as there are a few sites that don’t allow this.

You don’t have to stop with just one blog, either. You can have several blogs, all with links leading back to your website, once you have one. You can, if you choose, even design a website for your blog. For a low monthly fee, you can get a website complete with all the tools you need to design your site yourself without any specialized knowledge. These sites are designed to be up and running almost immediately.

Whatever niche you finally choose for your online business, keep in mind that blogging is a great way to promote your business without paying for costly advertising. Even if you’re not looking to earn money from your blog through ad revenue, at least consider having a blog to help promote your online business.

Not everyone can be or wants to be an entrepreneur. There are plenty of people who make good money online helping others run their businesses. Just as there are various types of assistants in the brick and mortar world, cyberspace has its version of the assistant position as well. You may have heard of Virtual Assistants and perhaps you’ve considered looking into what this position entails.

What Does a Virtual Assistant Do?

Like the brick and mortar’s administrative assistant, the Internet’s virtual assistant is there to help the boss run a smooth sailing ship. Tasks can vary greatly and so can the pay.

While you won’t need any money to start an online business as a Virtual Assistant, you will need to have a variety of skills. Here again, though, the beauty of being your own boss is that you can advertise your services as a virtual assistant to include the skills that you do possess. However, to be competitive and get work, you’ll need skills in at least the basics.

First and foremost, you’ll need to be more than computer literate. That’s not to say that you have to know the inner workings of your computer or be able to write in a programming language. However, you’ll need to know how to compose documents in a standard word processing program and knowledge of spreadsheets would also be good. More than likely, you’ll need a headset with a microphone so you’ll be able to “voice chat” or talk to clients and customers through one of the Internet’s chat modalities.

You’ll also need to have a standard telephone and you’ll need to have long-distance service, preferably the kind where you pay a set fee every month, regardless of how many long distance calls you make. You’ll also need the standard telephone services, such as voicemail, call waiting, and call forwarding.

Much of the work you do and the communication you’re involved in as a virtual assistant will be processed through email, so you’ll want to make sure you are well versed on how to send and receive attachments. A broadband Internet connection is much faster and more reliable than dial-up so if you don’t already have a reliable Internet connection, you might want to look into that and compare prices.

You’ll find a wide variety of online resources for the virtual assistant so if you are interested in this avenue, help is only a search engine away. You may choose to have one client or many and you may choose to offer only a couple of services or a wide variety of services. You will also want to decide if you’re going to charge by the hour or by the job, however this may also be dictated by the clients that hire you.

You may also consider in which field you’d like to offer your services as many professionals now use virtual assistants: doctors, lawyers, writers, Internet marketers, and many other busy professionals who simply don’t have the time to take care of all the day-to-day details of running their business. Whatever you decide, stay tuned!

You Can't Be A Writer Unless You Write!

I can’t tell you how many messages I’ve seen posted on writer’s forums by “writers” hoping to make a quick buck. I say “writers” because any writer who has to ask a roomful of strangers where to get ideas on what to write isn’t going to make it in this business.

Let’s get one thing straight right from the start. Few writers write for the money. Fewer writers still make the kind of money that Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, or Danielle Steele makes. While writers can and do make a living writing online, most of them work long hours to make enough to eke out a living, although a quality writer can build up his or her clientele and work into a rather lucrative position.

If you’re a writer, chances are you have so many ideas in the front and back of your mind that you want to write about, you won’t live long enough to write about them all. Writers write; and when they’re not writing, they’re thinking about writing and almost everything they see, read, hear, and witness sparks an idea for a writing piece. No one else can give you the ideas you get by simply living.

You won’t find near the demand for fiction writing on the Internet as you will for nonfiction. That’s because every website needs content and you’ll hear this word a lot when you’re looking for writing opportunities, however most of the content in demand online is comprised of factual articles. Almost any Internet marketer is going to need articles or some kind of content written to use on their website or elsewhere in order to drive traffic to their website.

EBooks are also an avenue for the freelance writer. Ebooks are written about all the same subjects physical books are written about. You might write eBooks in your own name or ghostwrite them for others. If you do want them published under your own name, though, be prepared to do the marketing for them as well. On the other hand, when you ghostwrite eBooks or any other writing for that matter, you are paid a set fee and the client most often purchases all rights to the material and is then free to use the eBook, article, or whatever you have sold them in any way they choose.

You can also get started right away by visiting writer’s forums and taking on work from other writers that have too much work. Usually, they’ll just ask to see a sample of your writing and then you’ll negotiate a price and time for the work to be delivered.

The Internet Marketer in You

If the idea of selling door to door makes you break out in a cold sweat, have no fear! The Internet slams no doors, yet is ripe with windows – windows of opportunity!

Some people were born to be salespeople. They can sell anything to anyone and can’t imagine doing anything else for a living. Then there are the rest of us! Still, before you let the idea of sales pass you by, consider the life of the Internet Marketer. You create, develop, or find a product or service to sell and then you set up a website. Now, if you’re selling something physical like toys or dishes, you’re going to have to invest in stock. However, much of what is sold every day on the Internet is digital and therefore no inventory is required.

Suppose you’re selling eBooks, either ones you’ve written yourself or have purchased or contracted others to write. You’ll need a dynamic sales page of course, but once you’ve put your “inventory” up for sale, your income is mostly passive. Every time someone clicks your “Buy Now” button or adds your eBook to their shopping cart, you’ve made money, even if you’re sawing logs at 3:00 in the morning!

While it will take time to build your sales regardless of what you’re selling online, the beauty of the whole concept is that you don’t have to face rejection or work up your nerve to approach people when you’d rather be digging a ditch! You will need to promote your site or products through various means, so don’t think you can simply write a book and put it up for sale and snooze your way to profits. The people who do that have already done the hard work.

Suppose you don’t have a product or service to sell but you like the idea of generating passive income and you’d like to get in on some of those lucrative sales commissions. You can still get started quickly and easily by selling other people’s products and earning commissions on them. You’ll be what’s known in cyberspace as an affiliate. You’ll advertise the product on your site and when people buy from you, you’ll receive your cut. There are many affiliate programs online and you can choose from a wide variety of products and services that you’d like to represent.

Whatever you decide to do, write, or sell online, you’ll need to promote it. This is the online version of advertising and short of purchasing ads, it’s free! Don’t forget too, that although cyberspace is made up of millions of people, just like the brick and mortar world, word of mouth still exists – and it can make or break your business!

Regardless of the type of online business you choose to start, you will build a reputation and with that reputation, you will gain or lose customers or clients. It’s important that you treat those you meet on the Internet with the same level of respect as you do those with whom you do business in the “real” world.

Remember, choose your business wisely by choosing something that excites you. Even if you have a grand empire in mind, and I hope you do, you can get started almost immediately for little or no investment. Start exploring your options today and make your dreams come true at last!
